When having your old windows replaced there two categories of window installation of which you must be aware. The first is called replacement windows. A replacement window can be wood or vinyl and is then fitted in your old assisting window frames. You are just getting an operating window, and in most cases aluminum capping on the exterior of the window frame. There will not be any new woodwork unless needed.
The second category is called a complete window and frame rip out. This is where the contractor can start fresh by taking everything out down to the original house window master framing. This is the most expensive way but the best way as the contractor has the opportunity to add insulation and flashing tape to the new wood window framing. After the contractor installs the new window they can now install the newly prepared window interior finish frame with it’s sill and moldings. Now the contractor will turn their attention to the exterior side and will fasten the exterior window moldings, sills, or aluminum capping and caulking. Now you have energy efficient windows.
In the installation of bow, bay or large window units the home owner must always insist on a complete rip out as the older window frames are usually weak and the window master frame needs to be upgraded to the appropriate load rating.
